The coming of spring is upon us.

Swelling buds fill the air with scents of new growth. The frost of winter begins to melt as the light of day grows longer and warmer.

The new season begins on the spring equinox at the moment when the sun shines directly on the equator. This happens on March 19, 20, or 21 every year (this year on March 20, 2015). The length of day and night become nearly equal, poised and balanced, but ready to tip over on the side of light. It is traditionally the day of equilibrium, a time of balance, rebirth, and new beginnings.

This year, the spring equinox will coincide with a supermoon solar eclipse, which will be seen in areas all over the world. This is sure to make it even more powerful.

The spring equinox is the perfect time to celebrate new beginnings.

The spring equinox brings the opportunity for a fresh start, to free yourself from things which hinder progress. As a day of equilibrium, this is a good time to let go of negative energy and create new intentions for what you want to manifest this year

The astrological year also begins on the equinox when the moon moves into the first sign of the zodiac, Aries, the ram. As the moon moves into Aries, a fire sign, the essence of fire and new life emerges. Full of power and light, Aries rules the spirit and primal life force, always generating fresh starts, new ideas, and new methods.

What you decide to create when the sun goes into Aries will have great power behind it.

During the spring equinox, take advantage of the creative potential by meditating and writing down intentions. Feel the rousing of energies around you in the earth, and meditate upon the changing of the seasons. This ritual will help to renew your spiritual self as the earth does every spring.

Writing Down Intentions for the Spring Equinox

  1. Take a piece of paper and title it “Be Gone.” On the paper, write a list of all negative feelings, habits, and situations you wish to let go. Then tear up the piece of paper or carefully burn it with a candle.
  2. Take a long, hot bath or shower to cleanse yourself of any negative vibrations. Visualize the water removing the darkness and dirt to reveal a brilliant white glow. You can also light incense with floral scents such as rose or jasmine.
  3. After the bath, take a second sheet of paper and title it “Rebirth.” Write down all of the things you wish to improve and welcome into your life. This list should include desired changes and goals you wish to accomplish so fill it with vibrant, positive energy.
  4. Afterwards, place the list underneath your pillow. Perhaps light a candle for a moment and meditate. Think deeply about your intentions, for it is a powerful time to attract what you wish to manifest this year.

Blessing Ritual of Planting Seeds

  1. Choose flower seeds or bulbs meaningful to you. Those who prefer, can also buy a potted flower instead. Choose plants which represent the things you want to sow during the new season – wisdom, acceptance, patience, etc. Visualize those qualities coming into full bloom in your life as you plant the seeds.
  2. Imagine each of the four elements necessary for the plant’s growth: earth, water, air, and fire. Pat down the soil, pour water onto the plant, breathe into the freshly planted soil, and hold the pot up to the warmth of the sun.
  3. Place your hand on  the plant or the soil. Connect with its energies  and, through it, all of nature. Visualize as you travel from the center of your consciousness out through your arms and fingers into the leaves and roots of the plant. Feel its inner nature; sense the miraculous processes of life at work within it.

Through this visualization, you begin to plant the seeds of your intentions which will sprout during the spring, bloom during the summer solstice period, and will then be harvested in the fall; during the winter you can evaluate the results in relation to your whole life.

Enjoy the spring solstice!
